Tickets & Prices

How much does a ticket for the Vatican Museums 2026 cost?

The official admission price on museivaticani.va is 25 euros per adult - that's 20 euros admission plus a 5 euro online reservation fee. On the three comparison platforms Tiqets, GetYourGuide and Headout, simple skip-the-line tickets start at around 28 to 32 euros. The surcharge covers the reseller margin and more flexible admission times. Guided tours are between 45 and 85 euros, depending on the scope.

Why are Vatican tickets on Tiqets more expensive than officially?

The platforms buy their own contingents and charge a service margin of typically 3 to 8 euros per ticket. In return, you get: immediate availability even when slots are officially fully booked, more customer-friendly cancellation conditions (especially with GetYourGuide) and German-speaking support. If the official store works for you, you save a few euros; for everyone else, the reseller surcharge is often a good investment.

Are there discounted tickets for children, students or senior citizens?

Children under the age of 7 are admitted free of charge and do not require a ticket. Children and young people aged 7 to 18 and students under 26 (with a valid international student ID) pay a reduced price of around 17 euros. There is no official discount for senior citizens. The discount can be selected on all three reseller platforms and on museivaticani.va during the booking process.

Are there combined tickets with St. Peter's Basilica?

St. Peter's Basilica itself is basically free of charge - there is no admission ticket. But there are: Combination tours that combine the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and a guided tour of St. Peter's Basilica, often including ascent to the dome. Depending on the provider, these tours cost between 75 and 120 euros and save two to three hours waiting time at the entrance to St. Peter's Basilica. Details can be found on our combined tickets page.

Why are the official tickets often sold out?

The Vatican Museums have a limited number of days available and in the peak season (April to June, September to October) the coveted morning slots are often booked out days to weeks in advance. The three reseller platforms have their own separate quotas, which they negotiate directly with the Vatican - there is often still availability when museivaticani.va is already showing red bars. Saturday mornings are particularly popular.

Is the Vatican City Pass worth it compared to individual tickets?

The Vatican City Pass bundles admission to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and an audio tour of St. Peter's Basilica and costs around 55 to 70 euros. For visitors who want to visit all three core attractions and prefer a structured route, the pass saves 10 to 15 euros compared to individual bookings. Those who are planning a guided tour anyway are usually better off with a combined tour.

Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel

What is included in the standard admission ticket?

The regular admission ticket grants access to the complete Vatican Museums including the Pinacoteca, the Gallery of Maps, the Candelabra Gallery, the Museo Pio-Clementino with the Laocoon Group, the Raphael Stanzas and - at the end of the tour - the Sistine Chapel. Not included: St. Peter's Basilica (separate, free of charge), the Vatican Gardens (separate booking) and the Necropolis under St. Peter's Basilica (special tour via Scavi office).

Is the Sistine Chapel always included in the ticket?

Yes, without exception. The Sistina is at the end of the single-lane museum tour and is included in every regular ticket - both on museivaticani.va and with all three comparison providers. There is no separate Sistina ticket. Only on special early morning openings (breakfast tours) or during special evening tours do different access routes apply.

Can I take photographs in the Sistine Chapel?

No. There is an absolute ban on photography and filming in the Sistine Chapel - with or without flash. Guards strictly enforce this and ask visitors to leave the chapel if they violate the rules. Photography without flash is permitted in all other rooms of the Vatican Museums; tripods and selfie sticks are strictly prohibited. Speaking should also be reduced to a whisper in the Sistine Chapel - attendants regularly call for silence.

Are the Raphael punches included in the regular ticket?

Yes, the four Raphael Stanzas (including the famous „School of Athens“) are on the standard route immediately before the Sistine Chapel and are included in every regular ticket. Many visitors underestimate this section and rush on towards the Sistine Chapel - a mistake: the stanzas are considered a highlight of the High Renaissance and justify a ten to fifteen minute stop. For detailed context, a guided tour is worthwhile.

Can I go directly from the museum to St. Peter's Basilica?

There are two exits at the end of the Sistine Chapel: one that leads back through the museums and a direct passage to St. Peter's Square. The latter is officially only intended for guided groups, but is often tolerated for individual visitors. If you use it, you save yourself the long walk back and a separate security check in front of St. Peter's Basilica - a total of 30 to 45 minutes.

Practical things on site

What is the best way to get to the Vatican Museums?

The nearest metro station is Ottaviano on line A - from there it is around a 10-minute walk north along Via Ottaviano and Viale Vaticano. Alternatively, bus lines 49, 32 and 81 stop directly in front of the museum entrance. A cab from the city center costs 12 to 18 euros. The entrance to the museums is not in St. Peter's Square, but on the north side of the Vatican wall - enter the address „Viale Vaticano, 00165 Roma“ when navigating.

What dress code do I need to follow?

Knees and shoulders must be covered - this applies equally to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Halter shirts, tank tops, shorts, miniskirts and see-through tops will be refused entry. In hot weather, a light scarf or a thin cardigan is enough to cover your shoulders. Fly vendors outside the entrance sell emergency solutions at inflated prices - it's better to pack a suitable cover-up in advance at your hotel.

Can I take a rucksack or bag with me?

Small handbags and daypacks up to approx. 40 x 35 x 15 cm are permitted. Larger rucksacks, wheeled suitcases, tripods and selfie sticks must be handed in at the checkroom free of charge. At full capacity in the high season, it can take 30 to 60 minutes just to drop them off and collect them later - if you arrive as slim as possible, you can save yourself this time. Water bottles up to 0.5 liters are permitted and can be refilled free of charge in the Pinienhof.

Are the Vatican Museums barrier-free?

Yes, basically yes. There is a barrier-free entrance with an elevator, wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge (on presentation of ID), and the main route including the Sistine Chapel is fully accessible with ramps and elevators. Admission is free for people with recognized disabilities; one accompanying person also receives free admission. Reservations are also recommended here to avoid waiting times.

How long does a visit to the Vatican Museums take?

You should plan 2.5 to 3 hours for an independent tour without a guide - this covers the main routes including the Sistine Basilica. Guided standard tours last 2 to 3.5 hours, combined tours with St. Peter's Basilica 3 to 4.5 hours. Art lovers who take time to visit the Pinacoteca, Egyptian Museum and Museo Pio-Clementino can easily spend half a day. An additional 15 to 30 minutes are required for the security check at the entrance.

Cancellation & rebooking

Can I cancel my ticket free of charge?

This depends on the provider and product type. GetYourGuide offers a free cancellation policy for most guided tours up to 24 hours before the admission time. With Tiqets, single entry tickets are generally non-refundable, but many Tiqets guided tours are. Headout also has many options with free cancellation, often even up to a few hours before the start. The exact conditions can be found directly on the booking page and in the confirmation email - check these before confirming your booking.

Can I change the date of my ticket retrospectively?

Direct rebooking is usually not possible on museivaticani.va - the only options are canceling (if allowed) and rebooking. The situation is more customer-friendly on the reseller platforms: GetYourGuide allows you to cancel and rebook free of charge for cancelable products, while Tiqets and Headout offer a rebooking option directly in the customer account for many tours. In the event of date changes due to force majeure (strike, illness), the support teams are usually accommodating - it's worth taking a look at the booking confirmation.

Will I receive a confirmation by e-mail?

Yes, all three platforms send a confirmation email with the ticket as a PDF attachment and a QR code immediately after payment. With Tiqets, GetYourGuide and Headout, it is sufficient to show the QR code on your smartphone - a printout is not necessary. After the official booking on museivaticani.va, a QR code will also be sent by email. Check your spam folder in case the email doesn't arrive and save the ticket offline in case your local mobile network is weak.
